Design And Technology

🛠️ Design Technology at Petteril Bank Primary School

‘Design is not just what it looks likes and feels like. Design is how it works.’ Steve Jobs

Welcome to our Design Technology (DT) curriculum page! At Petteril Bank Primary School, we believe that DT nurtures creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills. It empowers children to design, make, and evaluate products that solve real-world problems.

📚 Our Curriculum Approach

We follow the KAPOW Primary Design and Technology Scheme, which provides a progressive and engaging curriculum from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme ensures:
  • Development of technical knowledge and practical skills.
  • Opportunities to explore mechanisms, structures, textiles, food, and electronics.
  • Cross-curricular links with science, maths, computing, and art.
Children learn to:
  • Research and plan purposeful products.
  • Use tools and materials safely and effectively.
  • Evaluate their designs and improve them.

📅 Curriculum Overview

Each year group explores a range of exciting DT topics, such as:
  • EYFS: Exploring materials, building simple models, and food preparation.
  • KS1: Designing moving mechanisms, basic sewing, and healthy snacks.
  • KS2: Electrical systems, complex structures, seasonal cooking, and product innovation.
Our curriculum is inclusive, hands-on, and designed to inspire future designers, engineers, and makers.

🏡 Supporting Design Technology at Home

Parents can support DT learning in everyday ways:
  • Encourage children to help with cooking and baking.
  • Explore how household items are made and how they work.
  • Provide opportunities for building and crafting with recycled materials.
  • Visit museums or exhibitions that showcase design and engineering.
  • Discuss how products are designed to meet user needs.
