🌟 Our Approach to Music
At Petteril Bank Primary School, we believe that music is a universal language that enriches the lives of all our children. Through our dynamic music curriculum, delivered using the Kapow Primary Music scheme, we aim to inspire creativity, develop technical skills, and foster a lifelong love of music. Every child has the opportunity to perform, compose, listen to, and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions.

Kapow Primary Music
Our Kapow Music curriculum provides:
- A clear progression of skills from Reception to Year 6
- Opportunities to sing, play instruments, improvise, and compose
- Exposure to diverse musical traditions from around the world
- Development of musical vocabulary and notation skills
- Regular performance opportunities to build confidence
Each year, children explore music through five key strands:
- Performing – Developing vocal and instrumental skills
- Listening – Appreciating and responding to diverse musical works
- Composing – Creating original musical ideas
- Musicianship – Understanding rhythm, pitch, and musical notation
- History of Music – Exploring composers and musical traditions
🎹 Special Music Opportunities
Year 3 Cathedral Choir Outreach Programme
Our Year 3 pupils participate in a special collaboration with the local Cathedral Choir:
- Professional vocal coaching from cathedral music staff
- Learning choral repertoire and vocal techniques
- Understanding musical heritage and traditions
- Culminating in a performance at the cathedral
- Opportunity to audition for the cathedral choir for interested pupils
Year 6 Ukulele Programme
All Year 6 pupils learn to play the ukulele:
- Weekly lessons with a specialist teacher
- Learning chord progressions and strumming patterns
- Developing ensemble skills through group performance
- Performing for the school community and at local events
- Creating arrangements of popular songs
Additional Opportunities
- School Music clubs – Open to children from Years 2-6,covering a range of musical styles
- Music Assemblies – Celebrating musical achievements and sharing performances
- Concerts and Productions – Showcasing musical talents throughout the year
